Many of us may have already known that oatmeal and oat bran can help lower cholesterol levels. This is because bad cholesterol levels can be lowered by soluble fiber. Experts think this is because fiber stop the absorption of cholesterol. A good amount of soluble fiber to help achieve a normal cholesterol level is five to ten grams a day. Other types of soluble fiber can also help maintain normal cholesterol level if you find oatmeal not to your taste.

Another type of foods that may help maintain normal cholesterol level is foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids. This is because they can lower levels of triglycerides. Some types of nuts contain Omega-3 fatty acids. They can be a tasty addition to your diet for maintaining normal cholesterol. Walnuts and almonds are some examples of nuts which are good for lowering cholesterol level besides peanuts, hazelnuts, pecans and pistachios.

However, nuts with higher amounts of fat do not help maintain a normal cholesterol diet. These include Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamia nuts and some pine nuts.

Omega-3 fatty acids can also be found in fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, herring, mackerel and trout. Most fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids are cold-water fish. Flaxseed, canola oil or omega-3 enriched eggs can be used to maintain normal cholesterol levels too.

Plant sterols and stanols can also help lower cholesterol or maintain normal cholesterol. This is possibly because of their similarity to cholesterol. It confuses our digestive tract and keep it from being absorbed. Plant sterols and stanols can be found in many vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, legumes and seeds. The plant sterols and stanols can also be found in some types of oil, salad dressing, juices, milk, yogurt and in some snak bar additives.
